What you’ll do

An exciting opportunity now exists to join our Delivery Systems Safety Team to help drive the development of safe and innovative gene therapies and vaccines to improve patients’ lives. We use innovative molecular and cellular biology technologies and in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models to develop tailored solutions to assess potential safety concerns associated with delivery systems for gene therapies and vaccines.

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist with broad molecular and cellular biology skills and a track record of scientific achievement to join our Delivery Systems Safety team in Cambridge, UK.

As a Senior Scientist, you will be a key member of a team focussed on supporting safety studies in gene therapies and RNA vaccines. You will bring your theoretical and practical expertise in mRNA and gene transfer to establish cell and molecular assay systems, conduct research and deliver datasets that will directly impact our portfolio. A scientist who will stay up to date with relevant technical and intellectual scientific expertise in molecular and cellular biology is also strongly desired.

Responsibilities

Working in this laboratory-based position within the Delivery Systems Safety research group you will:

  • Develop and conduct vitro and in vivo experiments to improve our understanding of the safety liabilities associated with different delivery systems and payloads
  • Be a subject matter expert and review emerging literature and internal data to help in identifying new potential technologies and approaches to assess cellular responses associated with these modalities.
  • A solid foundation in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry is crucial for this role.

Essential Requirements

  • A PhD, or equivalent experience, in nucleic acid delivery systems and vaccine development or gene therapy, with 1-3 years of post-doctoral experience in a relevant research area.
  • Strong hands-on skills in molecular biology methods, including nucleic acid extraction and standard DNA/RNA detection techniques (PCR, qPCR and ddPCR).
  • Expertise in biochemical methods (Western blot, immunoprecipitation, ELISA and colourimetric assays)
  • Experience in cell-based assays, including functional assays, flow cytometry and multiplex RNA/protein detection (e.g. in situ hybridisation and immunofluorescence)
  • Passionate about assay development and an ability to learn new techniques quickly
  • Knowledge and practical experience in aseptic techniques and mammalian cell culture
  • Delivery attitude and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities, plan and meet timeline
  • Proven success in researching and preparing written scientific reports, publications and oral presentations

Desirable Requirements

  • Proficiency in Omics methods (transcriptomics and proteomics) and data analysis
  • Experience in multiple imaging platforms, particularly in the context of RNA localisation
  • Experience working with iPSCs-derived and primary cells would be an advantage, but not essential
  • Knowledge and experience in immunology and cellular stress pathways
