Specialist Social Worker / Systemic Family Therapist / Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Gender Identity Development Service for Children and Adolescents (GIDS) is looking for creative, thoughtful and dynamic clinicians to join us in our work supporting young people presenting with difficulties around or in relation to their gender identity development.

We are a cohesive, motivated and highly supportive multi-disciplinary team working together in this key area of expertise for children and adolescents. The GIDS multi-disciplinary clinical teams comprise Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists, Systemic Family Therapists, Specialist Social Workers and Clinical Nurse Specialists. We also have a dedicated research team which provides opportunities to engage with research within the service.

Due to the COVID pandemic, some clinical work as well as most meetings will continue to be carried out remotely.

You will have the opportunity to carry out lengthy and thorough specialist assessments with gender diverse young people and their families and to offer consultation and training to allied professionals. You will liaise with and contribute to network meetings with schools, CAMHS and social care. The role involves participating in the endocrinology clinic at UCLH.

The comprehensive psychosocial assessment and ongoing therapeutic support in relation to gender in GIDS offers clinicians an unparalleled opportunity for learning, personal and career development, and the building of expertise in this exciting and developing field.

All new staff are supported in their introduction to clinical work in GIDS by a detailed and thorough induction and through co-working with experienced members of the multi-disciplinary team. We also offer ongoing support and training forums, including regular supervision and CPD sessions, clinical case discussion groups and reflective practice.

GIDS is currently going through a period of transformation, which makes this an exciting time to join for someone who wants to contribute to service development and help shape our future as a world-leading specialist service. We are working hard to ensure there is excellent engagement with all staff across the service and our service users.

Candidates should have experience working with children, young people and families in a relevant work setting, and experience of working with families who present with a high level of complexity and require skilled and multi-layered assessment and intervention. This post would suit experienced social workers/ clinical nurse specialists/ family therapists who wish to transition into a wholly clinical role and further develop their clinical skills. Please note that applicants from social work and nursing background must also have undertaken some further therapeutic training, while family therapists must have a previous core professional training.
