Part-Time Band 8a Research / Therapist Psychologist
Job Description
Band 8a Research / Therapist Psychologist
Leicestershire Partnership Trust are looking to appoint to a Band 8a research/therapist post. The post holder will work as a Clinical Psychologist on an NIHR funded project (TULIPS: A Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial of a Ward-Based Intervention to Improve Access to Psychologically-Informed Care and Psychological Therapy for Mental Health In-Patients). This study will investigate the effects of delivering a stepped approach model of psychological care on acute mental health wards on patient and staff wellbeing and serious incidents on the ward. The successful applicant will play a lead role in the delivery of this model. Candidates should have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and be registered with HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist or have an equivalent qualification and registered with the BABCP.
The project is a joint endeavour across a number of NHS Trusts together with the School of Health Sciences, University of Manchester. There will be 15 other Clinical Psychologists working across the project at a number of different Trusts and wards. The Chief Investigator is Professor Katherine Berry and Co-Principal Investigator is Professor Gillian Haddock, University of Manchester. The TULIPS trial element of the post is fixed term for seven months; however, this is a permanent position and after this period the post-holder remains in post to introduce the model to additional wards at the base unit.
The successful candidate will be based at The Bradgate Mental Health Unit at the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester and will work closely with project team members at the University of Manchester. The Bradgate Unit provides acute inpatient care to male and female working-age adults. The unit consists of 7 acute wards and 2 Psychiatric Intensive Care Units. Clients within the acute inpatient mental health service present at times of crisis, often experiencing high levels of emotional distress, and typically have complex, severe and enduring mental health difficulties. Following the initial trial with the TULIPS project, the post-holder will have the opportunity to:
Utilise research skills to design and conduct further evaluations of the service. It is anticipated that these will lead to peer-reviewed publications.
Complete training in evidence-based brief interventions
Utilise and develop the full extent of clinical skills, working with people admitted to the unit with a broad range of mental health problems
Hone skills and foster expertise in specialist areas, through links with inpatient and community pathway services
Design and deliver training to ward-based staff and MDT colleagues specifically relevant to their needs.
The successful candidate will provide a specialist psychological consultation, assessment and intervention service to acute mental health wards and PICUs. You will offer advice and consultation on patient’s psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the Trust policies, procedures and service priorities.
The post holder will participate fully in multidisciplinary ward clinical teams, often leading them, in providing a service to their patients. You will be capable of conducting projects and working independently. Working within the team, you will support and supervise other members of the MDT and contribute to the development of changes to ways of working and reflective practice. You will play an important role in supervising junior psychologists; the successful candidate will ideally be trained to supervise trainee clinical psychologists or willing to complete this training.
Clinical supervision and opportunities for CPD will be provided.
The psychology department has strong links with local clinical and forensic psychologists, with psychologists working in different levels of security, and with local universities.
