Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented graduate to join our High Resolution LC-MS group as an Assistant Scientist. The position is ideally suited to someone looking to join the work force and build their career in Analytical Sciences within a leading research group. The position is located at our Tranent site, East of Edinburgh.
What do we do?
Before agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and animal health products can be registered for use, they must undergo robust testing to ensure they are safe to use.
Elucidation and understanding chemical structures is a key function in the Chemistry Department at Charles River Laboratories, Edinburgh and one that is central to the full range of ADME and Environmental Fate safety studies that we provide to our customer base.
Our group deploys selective extraction methods, chromatographic separation and application of state-of-the-art high resolution mass spectrometry to quantify and solve the compound structures in biological systems using radio labelling. These data are then provided to our clients in concise reports prepared for submission to the relevant regulatory authorities.

- You will be trained to maintain, fix and develop (U)HPLC, SFC and high resolution MS instruments (including ToFs and orbitraps).
- Process and interpret large data sets using various software packages and assist colleagues with various study related challenges within the High Resolution LC-MS group.
- Quality record keeping, timeliness and flexibility in an ever changing fast paced work environment are prerequisite to the qualities of a successful candidate.
- You will take responsibility for instruments and software and will be required to act as a consultant on analysis of novel pharmaceutical and agrochemical metabolites formed in biological systems.
Job Qualifications
What are we looking for?
- Applicants must be educated to Honours degree or Masters level in chemistry (or a closely related disciple with significant chemistry or analytical chemistry overlap).
- You will have demonstratable organisation skills and be accustomed to working within the frameworks of schedules and delivering to deadlines. An eye for detail, passion for learning and delivering scientific excellence will be critical to your success. You must be able to think critically to deliver elegant solutions to scientific challenges.
- An awareness of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) would be advantageous, however full training will be provided.
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of routine separation and analytical techniques based on their academic learnings. Some practical experience would be valuable to reinforce this. You should be able to identify key function groups in molecules and understand the relationship between these.
The salary for this position will be £21,632. Successful candidates will be appointed to the bottom of the pay band if they have no relevant experience.
