Full-Time Research Associate/Research Scientist – Automated Antibody production
Job Description
Make your mark for patients.
We’re here because we want to build the future and transform patients’ lives for the better.
At UCB, our people are our experiences and achievements, our passion and drive. That’s why we’re looking for talented individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences – not just the best and brightest, but those who care about making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients. We promote an environment of diversity, openness, and respect where people can make valuable contributions.
An exciting journey lies ahead. Will you join us in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible?
To strengthen the Antibody Production Sciences team (APS), based at our research site in Slough, UK, we are seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Research Associate or Research Scientist.
You like to work in an environment where you can:
Be part of a multidisciplinary team that supports projects from early-stage target validation through to late-stage pre-clinical evaluation through the discovery, engineering, and development of therapeutic and tool antibody reagents. As a graduate scientist, preferably with industrial experience in recombinant antibody or protein production, you will form part of the Antibody Production group generating antibody reagents to support multiple projects.
You will contribute by:
Timely communication within the Antibody Production Sciences team and across multiple disciplines (Project Teams, Discovery Sciences, Process Development, and Analytical Characterisation groups) ensuring that information on work progress is relayed clearly, highlighting any technical issues and providing potential solutions.
- Perform small-scale transient mammalian transfections and/or purify the expressed monoclonal antibodies using automated techniques, whilst organizing work effectively and managing time to work on multiple projects.
- Understand and interpret data to identify purification and product quality abnormalities, alert stakeholders with observations and consider possible solutions.
- Aid in the development of automated/robotic HTP transient expression and purification technologies and their integration with internal databases and workflows.
- Demonstrate a flexible and professional attitude with a willingness to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
- Demonstrate good presentation, communication, and data sharing skills in one to one and team meetings.
- Maintain diligent record-keeping of experimental methods and results via electronic laboratory notebooks and UCB’s online registration system.
- Maintain lab equipment to high standards, including assisting with maintenance and cleaning protocols.
Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:
In addition to a track record of recombinant antibody/protein purification, the ideal candidate will be familiar with analytical protein characterization techniques and their application to identify products and assess quality. You will be expected to work with a variety of antibody species, isotypes, and formats and ensure that a high level of quality is continually maintained so that end users have confidence in their data.
Equipped with a good understanding of protein biochemistry the successful candidate will be expected to troubleshoot and overcome issues as they arise.
To enhance our capacity and throughput all members of the group are expected to identify, evaluate and implement new technologies/processes.
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Biochemistry or Biotechnology-related field. This position would not be suitable for a candidate educated to higher than MSc level.
- Fresh graduates with extensive theoretical knowledge of mammalian cell culture and/or antibody purification and QC analytics may also be considered.
Desirable skills/experience to include:
- Practical experience in an industrial setting would be beneficial.
- Experience in cell culture, especially of mammalian cell hosts such as CHO & HEK.
- Experience in aseptic technique and maintenance of cell stocks.
- Experience in antibody or protein purification techniques and working knowledge of AKTA Purification platforms and Unicorn software.
- Experience with automated or high throughput purification platforms and analytical assays, such as UPLC/Empower and/or HPLC/Chemstations.
- Experience using liquid handlers/robotic systems would provide a distinct advantage.
- Competence in a range of protein characterization techniques: Analytical SEC, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
- Experienced in the use of excel spreadsheets and logistics databases to prioritise/keep track of ongoing requests and to log/keep track of samples.
We can offer you the opportunity to rapidly impact a wide range of our NBE & NCE projects; to significantly contribute to the progression of these projects into the clinic and beyond, as well as an informal and open working environment that enables effective collaboration and communication.
